OK, I know what you are thinking... A musical? About Anne of Green Gables? Isn't that about the most Canadian touristy thing you can think of? Well, you are right! But that was the plan man!! To see some of our beautiful country and top it off with some downright cheesy tourist fun.
But you know what? It wasn't cheesy. It was really good! Fun, entertaining, and very well done! The cast was fantastic. The storyline was well-written, interesting, true to the original story and a whole lotta fun.
A short quote from the program:
"Anne & Gilbert tells the story of the heroine and hero in late adolescence, teaching school in Avonlea and later going to college in Halifax. Gilbert's been in love with Anne since she whacked him over the head with her slate, but year after year she resists his loyal advances. Everyone in town knows they're perfect for each other....but Anne won't have him. Still, Gilbert, much sought after by the other girls, continues to hope."
The main characters are fabulous, but what stood out for us were the supporting friends and family! Josie, the outspoken class bitch that is determined to get Gilbert for herself almost steals the show. Rachel, the busybody neighbor definitely gets the award for funniest character. And who doesn't love Moody, with his town dumbass fiddling and antics? And for me, Philipa, the boy-crazy rich-bitch that befriends Anne at college was just wonderful.
The songs were cute, catchy, regional and memorable. DBF and I spent a few days laughing and singing "you're island, you're island, you're from Prince Edward Island"! "If you start predicting rain the minute the skies are blue, you're island through and through"!
Check out the official website for snippits of songs, details, and reviews. So fun!!
