OK, so apparently we have to shop around for car insurance. In BC it was government run, so you really had no choice....which sucked for so many reasons, but sure made it easy when it came time to get or renew your insurance.
So I guess I need input from you lovely locals!
Where do you get your insurance? Do you have a secret to finding the best deal?
Help us out!

I personally called around to agencies in the yellow pages and then went w/ the best rate. It took a while and I ended up switching companies too. I think it all depends on the coverage you want, how many vehicles, if you want house insurance too, etc.
I'd definitely call around and get quotes, definitely! But we switched to AllState and I have to say they have been the best insurance company experience and we had our huge MVA and we had to go through the write off of the car and then another small accident after that. They truly didn't try to screw us in the least and that's always the case it seems.
errr...we had to do that when we moved to Alberta and it totally sucked. I feel your pain.
But the upside is you don't have to deal with ICBC trying to rip you off if something happens to your car.
Hi there! I have never commented on your blog before, but I do read it every now and then, and I have to say...we are moving to Halifax in June (from BC, but we are originally from NL), and reading your posts gets me sooo excited!! I can't wait to be changing our health cards and shopping for insurance! No more ICBC..woohooo! I was just wondering if you would mind sharing which moving company you used, and how you shipped your vehicle?? Thanks, I would really appreciate it!
Hi Karen!
It was a military move, so we didn't have a choice in movers or anything.
Having said that, we used Bekins...and they contracted the move to a United driver. The company on this end was called Hoyts.
The service was decent all around. I wouldn't go with great, but good enough. Everyone was really nice, just maybe not as careful or organized as I would have liked.
They also took care of shipping the car so I'm afraid I don't know who that was. I'm pretty sure Bekins arranged it though so they could help you out. Be prepared though...it's about $2000 to ship it coast-to-coast.
Why are you moving back?
Thanks for stopping by!
Thanks!! I will check into them. we are in Northern BC and it is super difficult to find any moving company willing to come here to pick up our stuff. We are moving back to be closer to our family and friends. Now we are a country away...in Halifax we will be a 4 hour drive and ferry ride away. Plus, my fiance's family lives in Halifax, as do a bunch of my family and friends. While we do have great jobs here, a nice house, etc., we would rather be closer to our families. Thanks again for the info!
I'd check into the personal for your insurance. There is a special rate for military members and that's who we ended up going with, and we got a great rate. I think that there's a link from the Halifax MFRC site.
