I was just downstairs reminding DBF to eat up the leftover Chinese food and it reminded me that I wanted to blog about it.
Chinese take-out has always been one of my absolute favorites. In fact, whenever I visit my Mom we still order in from the same place that we've ordered from since I was a kid (it's changed hands and business names several times, but aside from the egg rolls everything is still pretty much the same). It's just not a mother-daughter night in without Chinese delivered for dinner. :)
Well, after what we ordered here the other night, I'm going to have to make sure Mom and I order in a few times while I'm home in May.
DBF always commented that Chinese food in Victoria just wasn't the same as what he was used to from Winnipeg. I never understood until now. Apparently West Coast Chinese take-out must be very different than the rest of the country... because what we got here was exactly what he was used to from Manitoba and Ontario.
It's not that it was bad, but it was sooo different that I didn't enjoy it.
Example: he always said that the Chop Suey we ordered was different...and now I see what he meant. On the island, Chop Suey was always chunky veggies (usually celery, onions, carrots...sometimes with bok choy or water chestnuts or mushrooms...sometimes with bean sprouts) in a thicker oyster sauce. His complaint was that he was used to mostly bean sprouts with some other veggies thrown in. Well that's what we got here. To me, it's a container full of bean sprouts in runny sauce with a few shreds of carrot and chicken bits thrown in. He was thrilled, I was not. Although, if you mixed it with noodles, it would make perfect Chow Mein.
I won't go into detail on the rest of it, except to say that even the sweet n sour sauce is different.
Needless to say, I guess we won't be ordering Chinese take-out too often unless we can find a place that does it the way I'm used to, because it wasn't something I care to have again. (And it was actually quite good food, I just didn't like the style.)
Next up: finding a good Mexican restaurant, because I miss Cafe Mexico and the island's own Delicados.

I totally get that there are differences, I grew up in BC, my Dad feed and milked the cows, milk was yummy, moved to Alberta and the milk sucked, ugghhh feed the cows differently get different tasting milk.. took me a long time but I can handle it now
Hm, I don't think I have ever had chinese anywhere else!!! I must try it when I am in BC, because what you had sounds like what I have in Alberta!
May I suggest Mexico Lindos. The place itself is a bit unorthodox (it's my old doctor's office now transformed into a little bit of Mexico) but if you like spicy that's the place. :)
Thanks Steph. Where is it?
Aww..home in May and not June?? Make sure you call me. And yeah we do have special chinese food here, I've had it in Calgary and its VERY different.
Best Choice Chinese Food - 28 Titus Street in Fairview (just a few seconds down from Nubodys, next door to Sicilian Pizza) makes THE best chinese in the city. Real garlic, real ginger, real chicken breast etc. and not oily and gross. Its a little hole in the wall type place but SOOOO good.
I never knew that Lynn, nice! I was going to recommend Zen which is located in Clayton Park in the plaza next to Sobeys (right beside Subway and Pizza Town). I've never had west coast chinese, but Zen is my favourite around here :-)
Mexico Lindos is in Fairview, on Dutch Village Road.
